Summer Assignments

While June & July give us time for rest and fun, it’s also a great opportunity to keep young minds active! To help prevent the “summer slide”—the loss of academic progress over the break—all students will complete assigned work in ELA and Math.

Please refer to this link for expected Lower School summer work to be completed by our new, incoming SMP students.

If you should have any questions, please reach out to our LS/MS Dean of STEM, Kelly Linder or our LS/MS Dean of Humanities, Mary Helen Acosta.

Interactive Learning Plans

Lower School homeroom teachers communicate class specific news through a weekly ILP (interactive learning plan). A link to your child’s ILP may be found at the top of the weekly newsletter. This will be your weekly one-stop-shop for all things happening in your child's classroom, including homework and projects.

3rd & 4th Grade Electives

The Electives Menu for your child to select their electives will be available in your parent portal by midsummer. Once logged in to mySMP, please look for a yellow banner at the top of your parent portal; once clicked you will be prompted to make your selection. Questions? Please contact Mrs. Lorna Gonzalez-Quiles, Assistant to the Head of Lower School.

Summer Assignments

Upper School students have required reading assignments over the summer to support their continued learning.

Summer reading keeps students engaged in academic readiness and introduces them to ideas, topics and themes that will be covered in the coming school year. The reading material chosen informs and directs the initial classroom discussions and assessments, as well as serving as a foundation from which teachers will begin addressing key terminology and class procedures.

Summer Reading
  • Honors English I: Selected Short Stories
  • English I: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
  • English II: Lord of the Flies by William Golding
  • Honors English II: Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold by C.S. Lewis
  • English III: Fahrenheit 451by Ray Bradbury
  • AP English Language and Composition: World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil AND Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
  • AP English Language and Composition: Reading Journal (required)
  • English IV: 1984 by George Orwell

Some AP and Honors Classes have additional course specific summer required academic work that will be sent directly from our Academic Deans.

    Volunteering at St. Michael's Prep

    Be Involved!
Our volunteers are an integral and very important part of the SMP community! With many volunteer opportunities available throughout the year, participating in our Warrior Dads groups or the Warrior Parent Council (WPC) is a great way to get involved, meet other parents, and help grow our school community.  Examples of ways to get involved are: Classroom Room Parents, Homecoming Week, Spiritual Life Activities, Community Service Initiatives, Christmas on Campus, and Book Fair to name a few. Please contact our Director of Community Engagement, Mrs.  Alicia Robertson, with any questions or to share your interest.

Ethics and Integrity in Ministry Required Training
As a requirement of the Diocese of Austin, all volunteers must complete the Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) training prior volunteering on campus and/or with our students. EIM is a workshop presented by a trained individual (certified by the Diocese) in an effort to educate parents and teachers about healthy and appropriate ways to be in the presence of children. To be compliant, one submits an EIM Application for the Ministry (one time only) and attends an EIM Refresher every three years. Questions? Please contact Mrs. Kathy Roy, Director of Religious Education.

    Nut Awareness

Our school community is an allergy-aware campus. While we do not guarantee the absence of nut or peanut products, we work hard to maintain a nut-free environment within the classrooms and designated areas. Parents are asked to follow the requirement of sending only nut-free snacks as these are often eaten in the students’ classrooms. Please visit this Safe Snack List for the recommended snack alternatives. Students are permitted to eat nut products in the Commons and Dining Hall during lunch time.
